Much Les – Les McCann 1969

After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann — primarily a piano player — began to emphasize his rough-hewn vocals more. He became an innovator in the soul jazz style, merging jazz with funk, soul and world rhythms; much of his early 1970s music prefigures the great Stevie Wonder albums of the decade. He was among the first jazz musicians to include electric piano, clavinet, and synthesizer in his music.
In 1971, he and Harris were part of a group of soul, R&B, and rock performers — including Wilson Pickett, The Staple Singers, Santana, and Ike & Tina Turner — who flew to Accra, Ghana for a historic 14-hour concert before more than 100,000 Ghanaians. The March 6 concert was recorded for the documentary film Soul To Soul. In 2004 the movie was released on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack album.
Les discovered Roberta Flack and obtained an audition which resulted in a recording contract with Atlantic Records.

Soft Samba - Gary McFarland (Verve) 1964

Gary McFarland (October 23, 1933 - November 3, 1971) was an influential composer, arranger, vibraphonist and vocalist,
prominent on Verve and Impulse! Records during the 1960s, when he made "one of the more significant contributors
to orchestral jazz". He attained a small following after working with Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges,
John Lewis, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, and Anita O'Day.

As well as his own albums and arrangements for other musicians he composed the soundtrack to the film "13"
(also known as "Eye Of The Devil"). By the end of the 1960s he was moving away from jazz towards an often wistful
or melancholy style of instrumental pop, as well as producing the recordings of other artists on his Skye Records
label (run in partnership with Gábor Szabó and Cal Tjader until its bankruptcy in 1970).

McFarland was considering a move into writing and arranging for film and stage when, on November 3, 1971,
he was poisoned by a drink spiked with methadone in a New York City bar.

Jazz Samba – Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd 1963

Stanley Getz nasceu na Philadelphia, Estados Unidos, no dia 2 de fevereiro de 1927 e seu instrumento dominante era o sax-tenor.

Representante do estilo cool-jazz , ganhou reconhecimento no "The Four Brothers", sessão de sax de Woody Herman (1947-1949). Desde então, seu estilo suave combinou-se com o da bossa nova brasileira, na qual foi introduzido por Charlie Byrd nos anos 60.

Ao lado de Byrd, gravou o Álbum "Jazz Samba" (1962), que incluía "Desafinado", composição de Tom Jobim e Newton Mendonça.

Com este trabalho, Getz ganhou o primeiro de muitos Grammys, além de estabilizar sua carreira solo.

Com o tempo, novas idéias e experimentos vieram, porém, sem fugir de suas características de improviso melódico, oriundas da influência dos clássicos como Lester Young.

Ainda realizava gravações e shows ao vivo nos anos 80, quando descobriu que tinha câncer. Faleceu em Malibu, California, no dia 6 de junho de 1991.
