Much Les – Les McCann 1969
After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann — primarily a piano player — began to emphasize his rough-hewn vocals more. He became an innovator in the soul jazz style, merging jazz with funk, soul and world rhythms; much of his early 1970s music prefigures the great Stevie Wonder albums of the decade. He was among the first jazz musicians to include electric piano, clavinet, and synthesizer in his music.
In 1971, he and Harris were part of a group of soul, R&B, and rock performers — including Wilson Pickett, The Staple Singers, Santana, and Ike & Tina Turner — who flew to Accra, Ghana for a historic 14-hour concert before more than 100,000 Ghanaians. The March 6 concert was recorded for the documentary film Soul To Soul. In 2004 the movie was released on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack album.
Les discovered Roberta Flack and obtained an audition which resulted in a recording contract with Atlantic Records.

What’d I Say – Ray Charles 1959
Ray Charles: What'd I Say 1959 Atlantic
One night on tour in 1959, Ray Charles had run out of material,
and needed to fill time before getting offstage. According to Charles,
the song he improvised on the spot is really "about nothing" — the lyrics
"don't make sense," he says, and it's not much more than a simple call-and-response exercise.
But from the audience's response that night, Ray Charles knew he had a hit —
so he recorded it a few weeks later. "What'd I Say" went on to become one of his all-time
best-selling songs, a number he would continue to play as an encore throughout the rest of his life.
One of the few Atlantic LPs to focus on R&B, and Charles wrote almost everything including
the powerhouse title track - one of Ray's biggest hits, and his first to crack the pop charts.
The instrumental "Rockhouse" is nearly as good, and "Tell The World About You" is gorgeous even
if it's a lineal descendant of his earlier "Hallelujah I Love Her So."
However, his reliance on simple arrangements and familiar riffs and chord progresssions
really hurts him on the lesser material: "Jumpin' In The Morning" and "Tell Me How Do You Feel"
are obvious, derivative blues numbers, "You Be My Baby" is forgettable early 50s rock and roll,
and "What Kind Of Man Are You" (sung by one of the Raelets) is a torch song that never really takes off.
And with such basic material, the band rarely gets to show off its strengths.
The high points are indeed high, but since so many Charles albums are solid all the way through,
I can't recommend this hit-or-miss collection very strongly. (DBW)
Ray Charles died at his home in Beverly Hills on Thursday, June 10, 2004. (RIP Brother Ray)...

H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player -The Howard Roberts Quartet 1963
Biografia
Roberts was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and began playing guitar at age 8.
By the time he was 15 he was playing professionally locally.
In 1950 he moved to Los Angeles. There, with the assistance of Jack Marshall,
he began playing with musicians including Bobby Troup, Chico Hamilton and Barney Kessel.
In about 1956, Bobby Troup signed him to Verve Records as a solo artist.
Around that time he decided to concentrate on recording,
both as a solo artist and session musician, a direction he would continue until the early 1970s.
Roberts played rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and mandolin,
both in the studio and for television and movie projects, including lead guitar
in the theme from The Twilight Zone, guitar on the theme from The Munsters
and rhythm guitar on the theme from I Dream of Jeannie.
Artists Roberts backed included Georgie Auld, Peggy Lee (Fever),
Eddie Cochran (Sittin In The Balcony), Bobby Day (Rockin Robin),
Jody Reynolds (Endless Sleep), Shelley Fabares (Johnny Angel),
Dean Martin (Houston), The Monkees, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, and The Electric Prunes.
In 1963, Roberts recorded Color Him Funky and H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player,
his first two albums after signing with Capitol. Produced by Jack Marshall,
they both feature the same quartet of with Roberts (guitar),
Chuck Berghofer (bass), Earl Palmer (drums) and Paul Bryant
alternating with Burkley Kendrix on organ. In all he recorded nine albums
with Capitol before signing with ABC Records/Impulse! Records.
From the late 1960s, Roberts began to focus on teaching rather than recording.
He traveled around the country giving guitar seminars, and wrote several
instructional books. For some years he also wrote an acclaimed column Jazz Improvisation
for Guitar Player magazine. To support his teaching activities, he founded the
Guitar Institute of Technology, and Playback Publishing.
Roberts died of prostate cancer in Seattle, WA on June 8, 1992.
His wife Patty, also active in musical education and
curriculum development, continued in this field after his death.
